This paper illustrates the grammatical development of the Korean ablative marker pwuthe from a grammaticalization perspective. A grammatical marker pwuthe derived from a manner verb pwuthta shows a unique semantic relation as Allative and Ablative. Ablative typically develops from COME FROM, DEPART and LEAVE. This is an interesting phenomenon of semantic change that involves antonymization, in which the meanings of the source and the result are compared. To examine the grammatical evolution of this marker, the current study suggests a grammaticalization process that is largely enabled by the conceptual mechanisms along the event schema, and presents an explication for the peculiar relationship between allative and ablative based on the cognitive forces that operate in language use. Reanalysis, among many others, is considered one of crucial mechanisms to evoke morphosyntatic change of pwuthe derived from a lexical verb. Metaphor and metonymy are examined as major cognitive mechanisms to invoke conceptual transfer, through which the initial semantic extension occurs. A subjective focus-framing is also presented as an explication for the bizarre relationship between allative and ablative concepts. In addition to the investigation of the syntactic-semantic change of pwuthe, the issues of layering and use frequency are explored to support the status of this item as a grammatical marker being in charge of Ablative in Present-day Korean. As a final discussion, distributional characteristics are designed to show the semantic diffusion of the ablative marker based on the corpus data
