The study about cure rate is an important issue in clinical trials for diseases such as cancer. For this the cure survival models have been often used. However, there can be a heterogeneity in risk for survival data with cure rate. Such heterogeneity can be modelled by introducing a frailty term in the cure models. We present how to model the cure rate via frailty and to fit the models using SAS PROC NLMIXED. The proposed method is illustrated with recurrence data from a clinical trial on leukemia patients. In particular, we demonstrate that the allowance of frailty in cure models can be identified using the procedures of testing and model selection.
