PEG-IFN은 기존의 IFN-α에 비해서 긴 반감기를 가지고 있고 일정한 혈장 농도를 유지할 수 있다는 장점 때문에 최근에 만성 C형간염에서 ribavirin과의 병합 요법으로 사용 빈도가 급격히 늘고있는 간염치료제이다. 벨마비는 원인 불명의 7번 뇌신경 마비로서 그 원인으로 바이러스 특히 herpes simplex 바이러스와 관계가 있다고 추정되고 있는 질환이다.1,2 2000년에 처음으로 만성 C형간염 환자에서 IFN-α와 ribavirin 병합 요법 중에 발생한 것이 보고되었으며,3 이후 세 편이 더 보고되었다.4-6 아직까지 IFN-α와 벨마비 발생의 연관관계가 분명한 것은 아니지만 만약 관련성이 있다면PEG-IFN의 혈장농도가 기존의 IFN-α에 비해서 지속적으로 높게 유지된다는 점을 생각해 볼 때 이러한 부작용의 발생 가능성이 있다고 하겠다. 저자들은 최근 만성 C형간염 환자에서 PEG-IFN과 ribavirin 병합 요법 중에 발생한 벨마비 1예를 경험하여 문헌 고찰과 함께 보고하고자 한다.
