The purpose of this study is to examine the export growth and development of Korean steel industry and steel products relative to that of China. In order to achieve the purpose of the study, we reviewed the current status of the steel industry and trade in both Korea and China and analyzed the competitiveness of steel products between the two countries by using trade specialization index and market comparative advantage index using import and export statistics. Findings reveal that based on an analysis of the trade specialization index, Overall, the Korean market shows a rise in the level of specialization in the Chinese market, while the Chinese market is showing a weakening in the level of specialization in the Korean market. Next, as a result of the comparative advantage index by market, Overall, the degree of competitiveness of Korean products in the Chinese market was analyzed to be greater than the competitiveness of Chinese products in the Korean market. In order to grow and export steel products in Korea, it is necessary to formulate measures against the over-supply of global steel products, and to actively prepare for the decline in demand for domestic steel products by selecting products with superior competitiveness and also M&A.
