The purpose of this study was to examine the moderating effects of gender on the influences of athletes’ perceived positive (supportiveness/emotional composure) and negative (negative activation) strength and conditioning coach behaviors on strength coach-athlete compatibility. Participants included 471 (male=270, female=201) National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division 1 football, volleyball, and softball athletes. Multiple-group structural equations modeling (SEM) analyses indicated an absence of significant difference on the factor scores of positive and negative coaching behaviors between male and female athletes. However, the magnitude of the effect was significantly higher for females on the path of positive coaching behaviors influencing their perceived compatibility levels with strength coaches. Negative coaching behavior had no significant influence on athletes’ perceptions of strength coach-athlete compatibility. A discussion of these findings is included along with future research suggestions and practical applications for strength and conditioning coaches.
