We investigate the resource management in orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) wireless networks. A cross-layer design of packet scheduling and resource allocation through medium access control (MAC) layer and physical (PHY) layer is suggested. The proposed packet scheduler at the MAC layer determines the packet transmission priority taking account of the quality-of-service (QoS) of both real-time (RT) and nonreal-time (NRT) traffic. It also decides the rate requirement for each user to the PHY layer. A resource allocator with low computational complexity is designed for the PHY layer. It aims at maximizing the total throughput while satisfying the rate requirement of each user from the MAC layer, over the frequency selective fading channel. The scheduler and the resource allocator are tightly coupled with each other through the cross-layer approach. The performance of the proposed scheme is evaluated by simulation. The results show that the system with the proposed scheme utilizes the resources effectively while guaranteeing the QoS well.
