In this paper, we design a cooperative packet retransmission scheme based on a distributed partnership management for wireless local and personal area networks. The proposed scheme can be implemented by adding a small amount of control messages to the standard two-way handshaking procedure. With the proposed scheme, a node is selected as the partner (relay), based on the volunteering probability that can be determined according to the respective channel qualities from the candidates for the partner to the destination. We analyze the packet transmission delay of the system using the proposed cooperation scheme, considering two operation modes at the destination: the selection diversity mode and the Chase combining mode. The numerical results show that both modes of cooperation outperform the traditional retransmission scheme without cooperation.
