The impact of the West, such as in the Opium Wars, raised various controversial issues relating to the modernization of China. In particular, there was no agreement on whether to accept the civilization of Japan, which had successfully modernized itself. Some have suggested that China actively adopt the successfully-modernized Japanese civilization, and that China accepted books on Western Civilization via the Japanese Literary Style, based on Classical Chinese. On the other hand, others claimed that China had to embrace Western civilization in a traditional Chinese way, since the Japanese Literary Style was based on Classical Chinese and marred traditional Chinese expression. In other words, these two opinions differ concerning whether or not the Japanese Literary Style based on Classical Chinese contains the core essence of itself, although most translations have come out of the Chinese traditional classics. Yan Fu and Kang Youwei belong to the former and the latter, respectively. Although, the claims of these two philosophers seem to be conflicting, they are, in fact, both based on traditional and conservative Chinese thinking. For this reason, this study examines the opinions of Yan Fu and Kang Youwei and validates the conservatism shown in their claims.
