It is quite natural that English literary criticism reflects the Englishness of England. Englishness or English traits have long been constituted by the general culture of climate, land, political system, philosophy, economy and religion in England. The English characteristics lie in moderation, harmony and dynamics through the "balance and check". In the history of English literary criticism we can recognize the deep-rooted flows of dominant ways of thinking, seeing and judging. We argue that there are three quintessential ways: experience, comparison and dialogue. These three epistemes are to be generated and implemented in every critical activity of interpreting the literary texts. Sir Philip Sidney(1554-1586) was the poet of Certain Sonnets(1581) and writer of Arcadia and Astrophiel and Stella(1581-82) during the Renaissance. He also wrote the beautifully organized The Defense of Poesy(1580-81) against the enemies of poetry. Sidney has been regarded as the first English critic in a genuine sense. The aim of this paper is to discuss Sidney's The Defense of Poesy as a representative model of English literary criticism in terms of experience, comparison, and dialogue. These three epistemes help elucidate the critical purpose and basic structure of the essay. They can also enable us to apply experience, comparison and dialogue as analytical tools for all practical English criticism. It is hoped that the three epistemes can be common guiding principles for a consistent and systematic approach to English literary criticism as a whole.
