Shizhen Wang has been largely regarded as playing the most pivotal role in reviving the Ci poetry studies of the early Qing Dynasty. This research will examine his poetry works, as well as investigate what relation this had to the revival of early Qing Dynasty Ci poetry. Shizhen Wang began writing poetry from a young age, specifically for a limited period immediately after he passed the state examinations and during his post as an official in Yangzhou. When Wang first showed interest in Ci poetry, he sought to express himself to the fullest without any restrictions, and he desired to achieve excellence in various forms and topics. Therefore, Wang’s Ci poetry emits diverse topics and styles, as found in his creations of not only the shorter Xialing, but also the comparably longer Zhongtiao and Changtiao works. However, his Ci never broke off from the style of ‘Huajianci’, and he wasn’t able to accomplish notable works with his Zhongtiao or Changtiao Ci poetry as well. Regardless, early Qing writers lavished much praise on his works and built up Wang as the best author of his time. From this perspective, the assessment that Shizhen Wang contributed much to the revival of early Qing Ci poetry is not due to actual accomplishments in Ci writing, but was greatly brought about by the fame and reputation bestowed upon him in Qing literary circles.
