This paper investigates Korean EFL learners’ perception errors. 32 Korean college students were asked to perform a multiple-choice identification test. They identified real words and nonwords with the target consonants /p, b, f, v, ɵ, ð, t, d, s, z, k, g/ in 2 different locations: initial onset position and final coda position. The result of this study is summarized as follows. First, the correct percentage of the target sounds in initial onset position was higher than final coda position. Second, the correct percentage of the target sounds in stop was higher than fricative. Finally, the correct percentage of the target sound in alveolar was highest, followed by that in velar, which in turn followed by that in bilabial, which in turn followed by that in labiodental. The correct percentage of the target sounds was lowest in interdental. It was also found that Korean participants had a great difficulty identifying English /f, v, ɵ, ð/, which are novel in Korean. The perception patterns were accounted for by the markedness.
