This study investigated Korean junior high and high school EFL learners’ motivation, demotivation, and resilience. The focus of this study was on (1) differences in those constructs based on students’ school level, and (2) the effect of the constructs on English proficiency. A total of 1,152 students participated in a questionnaire survey in this study. The results showed that the levels of motivation and resilience of junior high school students were higher than their high school counterparts, who showed more intense lack of motivation. As for the effect on English proficiency, the ideal L2 self had the most influential, positive impact, followed by lack of confidence, instrumentality (promotion), the ought-to L2 self, motivated learning behavior, negative influence of teachers, and inappropriate learning environment. Analyses of different effects of motivation, demotivation, and resilience on proficiency based on school level were also conducted. It was found that a greater number of motivation and demotivation constructs were involved in male students’ and high school students’ English proficiency.
