At present, the Uzbeks account for 82% of the total population of Uzbekistan. However, the ethnic identity of Uzbek peoples is not clear. Historically, the peoples who were called Uzbeks appeared in 1335 for the first time yet did not live in Uzbekistan. So, it is unclear how these peoples are related to the Uzbeks at present. Those who were previously called Uzbeks settled in present Uzbekistan beginning in the early 16th century. However, it is unknown whether the peoples who were previously called Uzbeks have a collective identity that is shared with the Uzbeks that currently account for 82% of Uzbekistan's total population. The former dominated the area because of their superior military power, but their population was not large. Certain historical circles claim that the Uzbek peoples of 1335 and the Uzbek peoples at present are collectively the same. Even so, no historical documents support this claim. To address this problem, first, I will summarize the historical information related to Uzbek peoples and will analyze the relation between historical Uzbek peoples and the Uzbeks at present. This analysis will show how Uzbeks presently account for 82% of the Uzbekistan population. Second, I will present various theories about the concept of nationality and apply it to Uzbeks peoples in past and present times. The national identity of the Uzbeks will be defined as part of this analysis. Third, using the prior two analyses, I will explore the ethnic identity of the 82% of the population of Uzbekistan that identifies as Uzbek and will evaluate their new ethnic definition.
