There are nominals with no N although there is no antecedent for the missing N. In this paper I propose that the absence of N is not surprising, since D is the head of a nominal, and NP is just one type of complements that D subcategorizes for: besides NP, D can take as its complement PP and AP, and it may take no complement at all. Furthermore, this paper provides a principled account for why only the determiner the can take an AP complement. Both AP and NP denote a set or an <e,t> type, but the former differs from the latter in that it does not provide information about the members of the set. Determiners usually quantify over the member(s) of a set, and so they cannot take an AP-complement. However, I claim that the, unlike the other determiners, can be a determiner for a set or a restriction, and hence it can take AP as its complement. This claim is shown to shed light on the syntactic and semantic peculiarities of such expressions as the intelligent.
