This thesis considers the rituals of Chungnam’s Yesangun Daesul district. Since the spring of 2009, we visited the site multiple times to gather materials and this thesis is the conclusion of the analyses conducted on the accumulated research materials. As a result of such on-site research, we identified 23 different types of rituals in Daesulmyun including the mountain god ritual, the tree god ritual, the water god ritual, and the Buddha god ritual. Firstly, this thesis includes the report on the status quo of each type of ritual. In particular, it will discuss the traditional flow and the strictness within the process of the mountain god ritual. As regard to the tree god ritual, the thesis discusses the ritual’s role as the guardian of the village as well as its role as the roadside god. Secondly, this thesis studies the rituals’ structures and characteristics. Regarding the structure of the rituals, the thesis will examine the structure of the ritual space by distinguishing the upper and lower spaces. Also, the thesis analyzed the time of ritual, the selection of the priest, and the sacrificial offerings that make up a ritual. Furthermore, the thesis also studies the case studies and sources of the ritual procedures. The characteristic of the rituals were largely divided into the maintenance of peace within the village dwellers’ living spaces and the prayers for affluence. Each of these perspectives were discussed based on the ritual documents uncovered within the Daesul region. Through the above discussions the thesis draws out the characteristics of various perspectives on the different natures and structures of the rituals from the Daesul district.
