Hawthorne made a creative use of his unique literary mode of ‘romance’ in The Scarlet Letter. The characteristics of Hawthorne’s romance are as follows. First, it describes unrealistic events very minutely as if they happened in the actual world, thereby endowing the story with plausibility. Secondly, events and background, even if unrealistic, must be faithful to the truth of the human heart. So Hawthorne portrays the psychology of characters and its change, securing inner causality. Hawthorne’s ‘romance’ is a dynamic synthesis between ordinary romance and realistic novel. The deep understanding of Hawthorne’s ‘romance’ and its effective use enables readers to guess the convincing reasons for two seemingly obscure actions; Hester’s resuming scarlet letter after returning to Boston and Dimmesdale’s confession of his sin to the public. Hawthorne’s ‘romance’ proves to be very effective to convey his moral vision of forgiveness and salvation as well. Pearl, a harbinger of salvation to Hester and Dimmesdale, changes from an allegorical character, an elf, into a human being. By contrast, Chillingworth, an embodiment of vengeance, transforms himself from a scholar into a devil. These changes are vividly captured in Hawthorne’s ‘romance.’ Furthermore, while providing multiple explanations, Hawthorne leads readers to think differently, and thereby to forgive, accepting even sinners benevolently. The vital correspondence between form and theme can be said to be an achievement of The Scarlet Letter.
