This paper investigates foreign trade in Chosen(Korea) and Taiwan during the colonial period, mainly the earlier half of 20th century, and analyzes one of reasons why these two Japanese ex-colonies are quite different each other in anti-Japanese sentiments. After reviewing academic achievements in this comparative issues between Taiwan and Chosen as colonial history and Hori-Sugihara argument concerning East Asian trade under the Japanese Imperial expansion, two indications was presented through the analysis on Sino-Taiwan and Sino-Korean trade. Firstly, the significance of trade with China in each area which have been overshadowed by the dominant share of trade with Japan needs to be evaluated justly, because the quantitative volume of trade successively was on growing and smuggling to China was enormous betraying the conservative image made from Customs official reports that nexus with China in trade had been vague to the neglectable degree after Japanese occupation. Secondly, Taiwan merchants fully exploited the opportunities created both by Japanese support and by overseas Chinese networks. They held the control in Sino-Taiwan trade. Accompanying Japanese expansion, Taiwan merchants found their way into China and South-east Asia and enjoyed more economic opportunities outsides. Presenting contrast to Taiwan, Sino-Korean trade was monopolized by Chinese merchant in Korea and Korean people was left out of economic opportunities.
