This essay aims to define the beautiful monster who never grows old in Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray as ‘becoming-youth’, posthuman, and ‘Homo monstercus’ through the lens of Gilles Deleuze’s concept of ‘becoming’. While previous studies have focused on the beautiful monster’s function as metaphors of the Other or as allegories of human nature, in this paper I will reinterpret such process of transformation from the vantage point of Deleuze’s philosophy. My application of this theory to the beautiful monster reveals the following conclusion: Dorian Gray wants to preserve youth for eternity not only in body but also in sensation and perception. He rejects traditional moral norms and conventions for they interfere and thwart his self-development and self-perfection. Such interpretations of this literary monster cannot be understood from a humanist perspective. This text demands that humanistic values be replaced by post humanism not as a fixed and stable unity but as a flexible being in the process of continuous becoming. The monstrous mankind such as Dorian Gray is ‘Homo monstercus’―he reveals the explosive forces of life in continuous ‘becoming’.
