We investigate the factors that influence a parent company’s knowledge sourcing from host locations. Drawing on both the capability perspective from evolutionary economics and the embeddedness & autonomy perspective from organizational theory, we develop a conceptual model and then examine it empirically focusing on overseas R&D labs of Japanese multinationals. Statistical findings from negative binomial regressions show that both technological capability of the parent and autonomy given to R&D lab matter. However, we did not find evidence that the embeddedness of the R&D lab affects the parent company’s sourcing of local knowledge. These findings suggest both theoretical and managerial implications in the management of overseas R&D labs within the MNC network.
