The intention of this thesis is an explanation of spacial essence of dancing body based on perception of body conceived by Merleau-Ponty, comparing with the body reflected on a mirror. First of all, the fundamental proposition for this research is the phenomenological theory of Merleau-Ponty. The thesis starts with discussing body and consciousness, body-subjective experience and perception. Using these themes, the thesis intends to show how the significance of dance appears in the dancing body and the viewer's consciousness, and to establish what the meaning of those processes and effects are; that is, to elucidate reflection and experience on the consciousness of dancing, and to elucidate perception of the dancing body. The most attentive elucidation of the phenomenological essence of dance is through ‘perception’. The phenomenological foundation of dance is ‘experience’ that is grounded in sense and perception. Therefore the vision inside the body that forms the perceptual experience of dancer, is different from the vision at the geometrical image of objects on a mirror. Consequently the thesis insists that the existence and perception of dancer's body can not be explained as the geometrical principle of mirror image of the body. Instead when a dancer perceive his body image on the mirror, he perceives with the vision inside the body however he confirm his bodily existence through the mirror image of his. Dancer's perception of space rely on his lived experience of space. The space between the dancer and the outer world, that is, la chair makes possible body itself the dancer's existence.
