This essay aims to explore how oral history can be utilized for dance history and to reveal what the academic values of oral history are. Korean dance studies tend to transcribe and archive oral materials and discuss general ways for their practical use, but do not discuss how the oral transcripts can be analyzed/interpreted for rewriting dance history. In order to solve this problem, I explore ways for analyzing the oral transcripts and issues for reinterpreting dance history.
In chapter II, I investigate how oral history can be defined and what the main issues of oral history are in terms of subjectivity, memory, and historical value. In chapter III, I suggest three analytical frames of oral history-the relationship between narrator and interviewer, narrative analysis, and reconstructive cross-analysis-and then apply them into a Korean dancer Song Bum's oral history. In chapter IV, based on my interpretation of Song Bum's oral history, I discuss several issues for rewriting dance history. I argue that oral history are historical materials which can be equivalent, not subordinate, to written materials, and which can rewrite dance history.
