There are unique points of contention in the description of March 1 movement in Japanese textbooks. The name “March 1st Independence Movement” includes efforts by Japanese academia to accurately and sternly accept the character of the March 1st Independence Movement. The problems of internal and external factors as the causes of the March 1st Movement and the number of victims of the March 1st Movement can be said to be a point where empiricism and ideology clash over how to describe the modern history of Japanese colonial empire.
The Manabisha’s middle school textbook went beyond traditional left-right confrontations and tried new forms and content. It conducted an experiment in which a story was told through concrete examples. It goes beyond the typical composition of the influence of national self-determination, the declaration of independence and the nationwide spread of the movement, and the suppression of the movement and the diversion of the policy of governance. It has also gone beyond the complacent causality that directly suggests external or internal factors. New numbers are also adopted that are more reliable for the size of participants. The challenge of Manabisha’s textbook also has implications for history textbooks of Korea.
