In this study, the characteristics of Kohu-gwan in the late Joseon dynasty were reviewed, focusing on its form, pattern, material, color, wearing social status, and usage, by analyzing the literature and painting data of Korea and Japan and identifying the origin of the shape and name of the Gwanmo. The study results are as follows. Kohu-gwan is spelled as 高厚冠 and 高後冠 in Chinese characters and is often referred to as Palgwae-gwan or Palgwae Kohu-gwan. Kohu-gwan is shaped like a square plate going back and forth on the Gwanmo. On the square plate, flowering plant, lettering, the eight trigrams, mountain are drawn. Kohu-gwan is an all season Gwanmo. In summer, a cool-textured material such as the Chinese hemp and sheer fabric gauze is used while in the winter, a thick and warm material such as animal skin, leather, and felt were used to make Kohu-gwan. The common colors were duroc color, dark black, and blue. Kohu-gwan were worn as indoor or outdoor Gwanmo for people of various status from the king to the middle classed men, and gradually became the crowns of the middle class and ordinary people. The form of the Kohu-gwan is believed to have been influenced by an Gwanmo that has a front and back layers from the top of the hat which was popular in China’s Ming Dynasty. However, the name ‘Kohu-gwan’ is believed to have been independently named in Joseon, containing the idea of round heaven and square earth. The property of the round sky is high and that of a square earth is thick. In other words, the ‘Ko’ of the Kohu-gwan refers to the circular part of the lower part of the Gwanmo surrounding the head circumference in which portrays the roundness of the sky, and the ‘hu’ refers squared plate of the crown, resembling the earth.
