This study examines Japan"s tourism policy, inbound demand, and its regional economic effects. It focuses on the case of tourist attractions to foreigners before the inbound boom. Japan is actively implementing an inbound tourism policy recently to cope with the decline in population and changes in industrial structure. It is becoming more and more realistic to attract 40 million foreign tourists visiting Japan in 2020 when the Tokyo Olympics are held and to consume 8 trillion yen. In addition, the Japanese government has consistently promoted tourism promotion policy with a long-term goal regardless of regime change, and is growing tourism as a key industry driving the Japanese economy. Japan"s case studies have suggested what policy efforts are needed to recognize tourism as a new growth engine in the face of slowing domestic economic growth and a decline in the local economy. Through this case analysis, the domestic inbound tourism market is overly concentrated in a specific market, and a policy for diversifying the tourism market is proposed.
A couple of suggestions are made for the tourism in Japan. First, rather than paying attention to the quantitative increase in foreign visitors, long-term goals and support policies are needed. Second, to increase the economic effect of the province, the unit price of the amount of consumption that can be consumed in the region is increased, and the food supply rate of the region is improved. Third is the development of cultural experience products that can attract returning tourists. Here, we need talent to solve the language barrier caused by communication. Fourth, inbound tourists need to relieve the metropolitan area and diversify their main visiting areas. To this end, it is necessary to provide various means of transportation with easy access from the city to the province. Fifth, the development of luxury tour products for the wealthy. Sixth, as there is Korea"s original culture to understand the difference between cultures, foreigners visiting Korea also have diverse cultures. Religious differences, etiquette Muslims, Hindus, vegetarians, and halal menu development are needed.
