This study aims to examine the metaphorical expressions regarding ‘love’ and find out their conceptual metaphors in the cross-linguistic differences among Korean, Chinese, and Mongolian. From the analysis of the figurative speech in the study, we can understand the cognitive structure of humans regarding ‘love’.
The findings of this study are as follows:
People from different cultural background have had metaphorical thinking. From the analysis, we can see that ‘love’, an abstract concept, can be expressed figuratively in any cultures at any historical period of time. We find many shared conceptual metaphors across cultures. Eastern cultures, such as Korea, Mongolia, China, share the same generic-level metaphors for love at a highly schematic level of the conceptualization based on bodily and life experience. However, the same conceptual metaphors display variations in the metaphorical linguistic expressions in different languages. A shared conceptual metaphors of love are elaborated in different ways across cultures. It seems that possible reasons for cross-linguistic variances in conceptual metaphors are cultural and historical differences.
