The present study is an attempt to offer a contribution towards a better understanding on the theological purpose of preaching with special reference to Isa 61. In order to achieve this goal, this study has five major steps. In the first step, we will review the scholarly opinions regarding the purpose of preaching, and then see the scholarly context and void this study would fill. In the second step, we will explicate the canonical place and message of Isa 61 within Isa 56-66. The third step will lead us to explore the theological implication of the proclamation by the servant in Isa 61; this will help us to identify and appreciate the theological purpose of preaching. The fourth step leads us to investigate both Isa 48:3-8 and Isa 52:7-10, which describe the proclamation as the divine action of bringing about the new creation of God’s people. Finally, based on these explorations and observations, the present author argues that the theological purpose of preaching is to bring about the new creation of God’s people in the redemptive history. Through this endeavor, we attempt to develop a comprehensive and integrating theology of preaching by exegetically examining the proclamation by the servant-a paradigmatic form of preaching-in Isa 61.
