La Niña Santa (2004) is Lucrecia Martel’s second feature length film. This film enshrined Martel as one of the foremost Latin American directors. Martel’s pieces are a eulogy to the senses. It could be said that the director stimulates all of the viewer’s senses to a point where the visual, the auditory, the tactile and the olfactory become slightly unsettling. Therefore, it could be affirmed that Martel makes viewers recover their awareness of their senses, and in the special case of La Niña Santa, of their sense of hearing. This research paper analyzes how Martel makes viewers conscious of their auditory sense, first and foremost on its own or by using images as a base. This paper also outlines how the director creates ambiguity in the film by manipulating the sound, how Martel hints at the deafness of some of the main characters, and how she induces or provokes the momentary deafness of the viewer. Finally, this paper contends that the deafness of Amalia suggested in the film (as a metaphor of adolescence) influences her choice of vocation.
