Sorption of the chemical tracers on the aquifer material could be one of the most interfering factors in the appropriate characterization of diesel in the organic soil by partitioning tracer method. In this study, the sorption isotherm experiments were conducted to evaluate the sorption characteristics of chemical tracers on the soils used in the column experiments. Sorptions of chemical tracers to Jumunjin sand and weathered granite soil were negligible while the sorption capacities of the mixtures of Jumunjin sand and organic fertilizer containing certain percentage of organic matter contents were found to be considerably high. The partitioning tracer experiments were conducted in glass columns packed with: (1) Jumunjin sand; (2) weathered granite soil; and (3) the mixtures of Jumunjin sand and organic fertilizer. The partitioning tracer method was applied with the uncontaminated/contaminated soils by diesel and the tracer response curves from the columns were analyzed. Results showed that both of the sorption of tracers on soils and the partitioning of tracer with diesel caused the retardation of tracers in the columns. The effect of sorption needs to be evaluated by conducting a pretest in the uncontaminated aquifer material to get an appropriate characterization of diesel contamination in the organic soil.
