Short fiber reinforced composites inherently have fiber length distribution (FLD) and fiber orientation distribution (FOD), which are important factors in determining thermo-mechanical properties of the composites. Since the internal structure has a significant effect on the thermomechanical properties of the composites, a non-destructive method is highly required to observe the three dimensional structure of fillers to acquire FLD and FOD in the composites. The internal structure of the composites is observed by using an X-ray microtomography and the FLD and FOD are fitted to various statistical functions to model the thermo-mechanical properties of the composites. The flowability of molten polymer composites is evaluated experimentally and numerically to evaluate the role of inclusions on rheological properties and processability of the composites. We also investigate the microstructural anisotropy of fiber reinforced polymer composites to understand the relationship between the local anisotropy and the mechanical strength of the composites. A shrinkage inhibition concept for the composites is proposed to explain the shrinkage behavior before and after an annealing process by using the Mori-Tanaka models. In addition, we visually represent the microstructural anisotropy of the polymer composites based on the Mori-Tanaka approach.
