This article aims to review Ki Tae-sŭng’s philosophical and political stance and re-evaluate Ki’s position in the intellectual history of Choson. Ki is usually explained as a pioneer of Yulgok school, as he greatly influenced the formation of Yi I’s philosophical thought and Yulgok school’s academical identity. However, this explanation is connected to the view that Ki’s philosophical and political idea was less completed than those of Yi I. This article re-examined the change of Ki’s philosophical opinion which emphasizing the appropriateness(中節) in the dispute with Yi Hwang, and Ki’s political stance and idea of governance. It is needed to evaluate Ki’s position in the intellectual history of Choson, through his own point of view, not Yi I’s.
