Most parts of the world have adopted tea and tea culture through direct and indirect trade with China. So it is natural that in most languages around the world, including English, words that refer to tea are derived from Chinese ‘茶’. Korean is no exception. In the Korean language, two Chinese Sino-Koren, /ta/ and /cha/ are used together in a similar ratio. The existing research on two Sino-Korean /ta/ and /cha/ of ‘茶’, which was assumed to be the confrontation of ‘Old vs. Post-Middle Chinese’ or the borrowing of different dialects, was reviewed critically on the basis of the analysis of the various literature reflecting the historical phonology and exchange history of Korea and China. Based on this, we conclude that it is reasonable to interpret /ta/ as reading pronunciation derived from MC /ɖa/ or /ɖha/ during the 6th to 8th century Unified Silla and it was settled down as a reading pronunciation and /cha/ as the secondary borrowed word from OM /tʃha/ reflected in Zhōngyuán yīnyùn中原音韻 before the 14th century of Goryeo and gradually extended its scope to the reading pronunciation after the 18th century. This interpretation is not only consistent with the knowledge of Chinese and Korean historical phonology, but also with the historical facts of the Korea-China exchange history, such as the time for the transfer of tea to the Korean Peninsula and the settlement of tea culture, and with the usage of /ta/ and /cha/.
