In this study, we have surveyed the presence of the progressive aspect markers and their aspectual variants in 153 dialects distributed in China. Furthermore, it was investigated what kind of grammatical process had undergone for the progressive aspect markers. Especially, this study is focused on whether the aspect markers of Chinese dialects whose functions are the same as Mandarin progressive ‘zai(在)’ was grammaticalized from the prepositions followed by its locative objects.
Based on the linguistic typological perspective and cognitive grammatical theory, we have proved that the grammaticalization of ‘zai(在)’ type aspect markers has two major paths, and has made the theoretical explanation in this paper. One path is a process which makes the ‘nar(那儿)’ in ‘zai(在)+nar(那儿)+VP’ construction bleached semantically and eroded phonologically and merged into ‘zai(在)’, which became to function as a progressive aspect marker and a preposition. The other path is a process in which ‘zai(在)’ in the ‘zai(在)+VP’ construction has directly developed into a progressive aspect marker. This path can be supported by the fact that in many Chinese dialects the forms of progressive markers are different from those of prepositions and the fact that verbs with locative meaning have evolved into grammatical aspect markers in many languages of the world. The empirical evidence and theoretical interpretation of this paper show that the grammaticalization of the Chinese progressive aspect does not violate the universal development path of the human languages.
