This article investigates the participation of Korean women in people’s movement during the 19th century, compared with that of Chinese and Japanese women. In Korea, there are few cases of women’s participation in people"s movement. In the case of China and Japan, however, there are a lot more examples of women’s participation in the movement.
The differences between Korea and China and Japan were discussed in this article in relation to the ruling ideology and the development of commerce. The Neo-Confucianism was more influential in Joseon than China and Japan. Women who participated in the movement, however, were mostly lower classes. Therefore, it is implausible to explain the absence of Korean women"s participation in the people’s movement than Chinese and Japanese women in the perspectives of Neo-Confucian ideology and its male-dominant society.
The development of commerce or the city is another important factor. In the western and Japanese people’s movements, where women have participated in, many of them arose in the urban area as food riots. Joseon, however, was the most repressed country in terms of commerce among three East Asian countries. Moreover, the state’s control on merchants was heavily imposed around the country. This difference should be considered in the explanation about the lack of women’s participation in people’s movement during the 19th Joseon era.
