From the view of Universal Linguistic that noun [+N] can’t serve as a predicate alone, so we start to doubts about Chinese Nominal sentences which has been regarded as a special phrase form in traditional Chinese grammar. We regard the Chinese Nominal sentences [NP1+NP2] as a ellipsis of copula constructions [NP1+shi(是)+NP2], and mainly tried to find its Licensing conditions.
The results found that there has Ellipsis of Copula verbs in Chinese nominal sentences mainly because of its syntactic-semantic conditions. First, in Chinese it has two different copula which is in identificational copula sentences and predicational copula sentences. And, the copula in the identificational sentences has its syntactic functions, so it uses obligatory, On the contrary, the copula in the predicational sentences just serve as linker, it has not semantic functions, so it used optionally at the surface constructions. The most important conditions is that the semantic types of the non-verbal predicates and their predication, they were the most important influence about the ellipsis of the copula. furthermore, it has different degree of the ellipsis possibility because of the pragmatic hierarchy in the quantificational Nominal phrases in the chinese existential predication. Therefore, the ellipsis copula verbs in Chinese nominal sentences affected by syntactic, semantic and pragmatic conditions.
