Koreans have migrated to major cities around the world. Today, approximately seven million Koreans (or ten percent of North and South Koreans combined) live outside of the Korean peninsula, scattered in 175 countries around the world including China ( 2.3 million), Japan (0,9 million), and America (2.1 million). As of 2008, Greater Los Angeles has the largest Korean community in the United States with about 350,000 ethnic Koreans, 16 percent of the United States’ Korean American population. After the 1992 Los Angeles riots, many Koreans moved from the modern Koreatown at Olympic Boulevard to suburbs in Orange County and the two Inland Empire counties: Riverside and San Bernardino. By 2008 many ethnic Korean communities had appeared in the northwestern San Fernando Valley, including Chatsworth, Granada Hills, Northridge, and Porter Ranch. In addition, by 2008 Korean communities had appeared in Cerritos and Hacienda Heights in Los Angeles County, and Buena Park and Fullerton in Orange County. Wherever Koreans go, they open up Korean churches: the Korean population might be more Christian in diaspora than it is at home (e.g., 60 percent of Koreans in the United States are Christian, but only 25 percent at home). What impact particular geographic and social location has on the Korean diaspora churches in greater Los Angeles? This study explores the six cases of large congregations in various regions: Young Nak Presbyterian Church of Los Angeles and Berendo Street Baptist Church (BSBC) in the Koreatown, Grace Ministries International and Sarang Church of Southern California in Orange County, All Nations Church and Church Everyday in San Fernando Valley.
