The purpose of this study is to examine the problem of the loss of identity as blacks in The Bluest Eye and the tragedy of blacks who internalize white-centered values. Toni Morrison addresses the issue of dual consciousness that blacks cannot be fully fused or mixed in American society. It seems that Morrison worries about the disappearance of the tradition and history of the black community. For example, Pecola, the black heroine, tries to deny her black identity by looking at the world with white eyes instead of black eyes in this work. Pecola got the blue eyes she wanted so much, but it was just the blue eyes that another self inside her could see. Pecola does not grow into a black subject, and there are many causes for schizophrenia. First, Pecola"s parents lack responsibility for their children and fail to form a bond between them. Second, within the black community, Peccola is despised and ridiculed, leading to self-loathing. Third, Pecola"s father is destroying her body through physical sexual assault twice. Fourth, Pecola"s mother does not provide comfort and care except physical assaults. The Bluest Eye, in comparison with other racial issues, is significant in that it describes the problems of black society as well as the destructiveness of white superior ideology. In conclusion, Morrison suggests to readers that black people"s true involvement in American society and their true identity as Americans should be based on black eyes, not white eyes.
