Toni Morrison’s third novel, Song of Solomon takes a black man as its protagonist, demonstrating his southern journey to find out the history of his family. He also tries to find myth of African Americans to construct his self-identity. Morrison not only shows African Americans’ miserable lives and their sufferings caused by the discrimination in the white-dominated society, but also analyzes the causes of their isolation and loss of self-identity which are related to their disharmonious relationship with nature, with other people in society and with their inner self. Confucian “Unity of Heaven and Human” advocates a harmonious and coexisting relationship between Heaven and human. This idea mainly demonstrates three harmonious relationships in the universe: the relationship between human and Nature, relationship between human and society and relationship between man and self. This exactly corresponds with the main ideas expressed in her Song of Solomon.
