The purpose of this study is to analyze the syntactic, semantic and pragmatic features of the “(shi)+VOV+de(的)” construction in Modern Chinese. The results of this paper are as follows:
First, the “(shi)+VOV+de(的)” construction was formed by the arbitrary addition of the focus marker “shi(是)” after the complement ‘R’ was omitted in the verb copy construction “VOV得R” and the “de(得)” replaced by “de(的)”.
Second, the “(shi)+VOV+de(的)” construction describes the ‘cause’ that produced the result. Duplication of verb also indicates that the behavior is strengthened and the degree is severe, which is an emphasis on the operating force as verb has the meaning feature of ‘continuance’ or ‘repetition’.
Third, the “(shi)+VOV+de(的)” construction is mainly used to describe the causes for producing negative results, and sometimes to indicate the causes for positive or neutral results.
