Modern architecture and design presents a variety of heterogeneous, multifarious expressions, reinterpreting and expressing the performance of materials or the function of Spaces, the processes contained therein. This mode of series is interpreted as immaterial rather than reductive. On the basis of the investigation of the immateriality of explicit space, the meaning of spatial design and immateriality is redefined. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to understand the concept of immaterial in space and the immaterial characteristics and types in modern space design, and to analyze the immaterial characteristics in domestic residential space. First, the background and purpose of the research, the scope and methods of the research are put forward. Second, through literature research, understand the concept of immaterial in space, investigate the immaterial characteristics and types in space design, including the theoretical background of classification. Thirdly, the case investigation in China was conducted, and the content of this course was comprehensively sorted out. The immaterial design characteristics of the living space interior were analyzed together with the data and pictures, and the characteristics were analyzed and the influences were put forward. Modern spatial design is represented by the mixed expression of different qualities, the reinterpretation of spatial functions and procedures, and the pluralistic era of various forms and materials. In this paper, the immaterial characteristics appearing in the interior design of domestic living space are divided into material performance characteristics, boundary characteristics and media characteristics.
