With the growing environmental crisis in recent times, an eco-friendly paradigm is coming to the fore, and in the field of architecture and interior architecture, research and development of sustainable architecture and eco-friendly materials is in progress. Also, studies on organic architecture discovered in the sense of natural phenomena are being conducted. The term ‘Organic’ has been revalued since the works of F. L. Wright, who developed architecture and art of the 20th century by establishing the principle of organic architecture based on the principles and forms derived from nature, in harmony with it. This study aims to understand characteristics of ‘organic architecture’, which is an architectural concept of F. L. Wright and serve as fundamental data for sustainable architecture studies. As organic characteristics of architecture, natural materials, connection of organic spaces, structural harmony with nature, harmony of lights, natural materials and material properties and colors, mutual relations among nature, topography and architecture, design for democracy (for the people in the economic crisis), harmony between land·nature and architecture, connectivity of spaces, forms of lighting, and simpleness and peacefulness of architecture illustrate his architectural ideology and idea frankly. This study can help in comprehending organic architecture, as a part of sustainable architecture, which is in active progress recently and serve as basic data. On the other hand, this study has limits due to a small number of cases that are not enough to understand characteristics of organic architecture, and an absence of comparison with organic architecture of other architects including Aalto, in addition to F. L. Wright.
