Korean society entered an aging society and the number of dementia patients continues to grow. Since socioeconomic cost regarding dementia patients rises drastically, the government policy shifts to active prevention, and the importance of cognitive health, which is believed to extends the period before cognitive decline reaches a pathological state, is being noted. In keeping with this flow, there is a need to apply cognitive health in residential spaces in which aged people spend most of their time.
This paper is a preliminary step for the development of a cognitive health design guideline that could be used as a housing providers’s point of view, and aims to analyze foreign guidelines to derive major planning directions and implications. First of all, concept and expected effects of cognitive health design were set. Secondly, foreign guidelines regarding dementia friendly housing was analyzed to derive design principles and major planning elements Finally, matters to be noted and application methods in the development of cognitive health guidelines in terms of housing providers were discussed. Results of this study are expected to be used as basic data for the development of cognitive health design guidelines.
