Shamanism has been considered by some scholars as an archetype of Korean culture. Especially for scholars, foreign or native, of Korean folklore, shamanism is the root or core of Korean culture and religiosity. Many of these scholars argue that although it initially oppressed shamanism, the Japanese colonial government later tried to mobilize shamanism for the spiritual development of the colonized. This paper tries to refute these statements.
First, it is doubtful that shamanism is the archetype of Korean culture. Second, this paper refutes contemporary sympathizers of Korean shamanism who argue that the colonial government tried to mobilize shamanism for the spiritual development of the colonized. Third, I maintain that Korean nationalists urged the colonial police to destroy the superstitions referred to as shamanism. Through this discussion, I will demonstrate the complexities of religion-politics in colonial Korea.
