This article explores the impact of “compositional” variables on the dissimilarity index, a commonly used measure of ethnic segregation. It argues that these compositional factors collectively are under-appreciated within residential demography. They may ultimately better account for variation in dissimilarity index values than more commonly recognized variables such as ethnicity, time, or place. The paper makes this argument in part through decomposing various elements of scale. Data from five decennial censuses within the United States, nine ethnic groups and many thousands of regions give this project the large sample size needed to uncover the patterns associated with the compositional variables. These compositional variables include units per region, regional population, population per unit, as well as minority group population and proportion within regions. Results from descriptive statistics and regression show that some of these variables’ effects on dissimilarity-index values differ from previous assumptions. Additionally, almost all of these variables’ effects are more complex mathematically than previously recognized.
