A gastric mass survey using a gastroenteric photofluorgraphic apparatus was performed to 801 coastal inhabitants of Chonnam province during one month's period from October 16, 1974 to November 16, 1974. The deformities of the stomach detected by photofluorography were studied by standard upper gastrointestinal series and the following result are obtained; 1. Among a total of 801 examinees, male occupied 56.7%(454) and female did 43.3%(347). The sex ratio was 1.3 : 1 (M:F). 2. On photofluorographic studies, 93.0%(745) of the miniature films was satisfactory and 7.0%(56) of them was unsatisfactroy for interpretation. 3. Among 745 satisfactory miniature films, 610 cases(81.8%) of normal stomach, 51 cases(6.8%) of gastric diseases, 82 cases(11.0%) of duodenal diseases, and two cases of miscellaneous diseases(enlarged pancreatic head and gastrectomy) were suspected. 4. The sex ratio of the examinees with suspected gastric diseases was 1.5 : 1 (M:F) and that of the examinees with s spected duodenal diseases was 1 : 1.2 (M:F). 5. Among 51 cases of suspected gastric diseases, 21 cases were studied by standard X-ray examination and the results were as follows; two cases of gastric cancer, one case of gastritis or gastric cancer, one case of gastric polyp, ten cases of gastritis three cases of chronic duodenal ulcer, and four normal stomach. It is our belief that gastric mass screening by photofluorography is a necessary and suitable method for early detection of gastric cancer by improving technically and reading capacity of the miniature films.
