Even before her trip to South America at the age of 40, Elizabeth Bishop had lived an incessantly non-sedentary life in USA moving from one place to another. Though she doesn’t have a sense of home in any specific place, Bishop believes that every place is equally home. Her natural nomadic consciousness of frequent travels is well suited to Nomadism, which prominent theorists such as Gilles Deleuze, Jacques Attali, Michel Maffesoli, and Rosi Braidotti assert. Bishop’s extensive cultural journey in Brazil for around 20 years is quite in accord with the vital components of wandering, flight, connection, deterritorialization, and dynamic rootedness in Nomadism. This is well exemplified in her Brazil poems in Questions of Travel. By practicing dynamic rootedness in Brazil, the poet could make a “proto-dream house” in Samambaia. Her cultural immersion into Brazil paves the way for deconstructing the boundary of center/margin, which goes toward connecting and communing with the marginalized others, including both human and non-human beings. With the perspective of an “insider” in Brazil, the poet is able to demolish her “old stereotyped idea” and construct ideal communalism emphasizing the sense of solidarity between I and the others.
