Almost two years have passed since the concept of ‘the 4th industrial revolution’ was raised at World Economic Forum in Switzerland in January, 2016. However, the 4th industrial revolution is still the number-one key-word in the Korean government’s policy establishment. In the era of the 4th industrial revolution, intellectual property rights (IPRs) have become important among convergence technologies such as artificial intelligence, internet of things and big data. Major countries have attempted quantitative analyses of IPRs’ roles and impacts on national economies by conducting continuous research on IP-intensive industries. US Department of Commerce (2012) and European Patent Office(EPO) & Office for Harmonization in the Internal Market (OHIM) (2013) published research reports on the economic contribution of IP-intensive industries in the United States and European Union, respectively. Afterwards in 2016, US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and EPO & EU Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) announced updated statistics reports on IP-Intensive industries and their economic contributions, respectively. In Korea, Korea Intellectual Property Office (KIPO) and Korea Institute of Intellectual Property (KIIP) conducted research on IP-intensive industries based on the research framework of the US and EU in 2014. As the second approach to publishing statistics of Korea’s IP-intensive industries, this research modified some limitations in data and methodologies of the previous research, classified IP-intensive industries in Korea, and analyzed the economic contribution of IP-intensive industries in Korea. We defined IP-intensive industries as “industries that have high intensity of intellectual activities, protect and utilize them as IPRs in value creation.” IP-intensive industries in Korea were classified among patent, design, trademark rights and copyrights, and the economic contributions of IP-intensive industries were analyzed with Korean economic data in 2010 and 2015. Analyses on the economic contributions are three folds: i) trend analysis of years 2010 vs. 2015, ii) comparative regional state analysis of Korean 17 administrative districts, and iii) empirical analysis of firms’ IP activities on profits, value added and job creation. This research compared the analysed results of economic contributions of Korea’s IP-intensive industries with those of the US and the EU. Our results verified the importance of IP rights in economic performance and job creation at the industry level. This report also suggested implications on the expanded research areas of IP-Intensive industries in Korea
