Black clothes in the late Joseon Dynasty disappeared due to the strong driving force of the momentum of modernity. This study investigated the meaning of black clothes in the late Joseon Dynasty, which is closest to when you perceive it as a tradition and accounts for most relics. To overcome the preconceived notion and inductive or empirical research method applied when studying the traditional costume, "the Virtual" and the deductive study was conducted to understand the potential value and meaning of black clothes in the Korean tradition. The color of black in black clothes in the late Joseon Dynasty was not a simple black but with a slight cast of red, blue, green, and achromatic gray colors. The color of black symbolized a governance system by ritual ceremonies, a dynamism through the energy of yin and yang, and a social order. The reflection of black color in the ceremonial rituals of the Neo-Confucianism can be divided into five categories: clothes for ancestral rites and wedding, clothes for diplomatic events, clothes for a public official, headdress for the Seonbi, and black trimming for a scholar. Danryeong and military uniforms were black color, which was integrated the yin yang and five elements. Lastly, crown prince and princess clothes, hapi, fur headdress and boots, and servant clothes used black color to indicate the social status. As a result, black clothes in the late Joseon Dynasty had a spiritual meaning. Since the opening of ports, especially after the Gabo reform in 1894, the movement to abolish the caste system to build an equal society reduced the solemn and rigid attitudes enforced by Neo-Confucian rituals, abolished gat and pelangi, and dressed all classes in black, which meant the best and lowest colors in Joseon society at the same time.
