This study focuses on researching and evaluating increasing gated communities and their impacts on neighborhood walking environments, especially their accessibility, generality and convenience issues. For data collection, a literature review targeting gated communities and LEED for Neighborhood Development (LEED-ND) were conducted. In this study, five apartment complexes located in Seocho district, Seoul, Korea were chosen and evaluated. The evaluation criteria consists of six standards, which are; pedestrian regulation, vehicle control, segregation of pedestrian and vehicle, accessibility, visitability and universal design, tree-lined and shaded streetscapes. These standards created and used in this study are based upon LEED for Neighborhood Development (LEED-ND). The results are ass follows; First, gated communities were increasing in both number and their range of control. Second, as gated communities and their vehicle control systems developed, segregation of pedestrian and vehicle became more obvious. This resulted in creating pedestrian-friendly walking environment within each apartment complex. Finally, since designs of gate systems and fences segregating the apartment complexes lacked concerns over the disabled and the elderly, both accessibility, visitability and universal design were compromised. Yet, tree-lined and shaded streetscapes have been promoted as gated communities developed, because most of the fences were combined with roadside trees.
