This study analyzes the factors motivating young people to migrate to Ulleungdo, a South Korea island, both long- and short-term, as well as the facilitators and barriers to their successful settlement on Ulleungdo. To carry out this study, I conducted in-depth individual interviews with seven participants. This study found that local government policies and short-term programs play a crucial role in motivating young people to move to Ulleungdo. The interviews further revealed that young people who have no connection to Ulleungdo have the greatest difficulty in finding housing and integrating into the local community. The lack of housing and youth communities is their greatest obstacle to migrating to Ulleungdo. In order to motivate young people to settle down on Ulleungdo, comprehensive policy reform is needed. First of all, young people should be allowed time to experience and explore Ulleungdo on their own. Second, a migration aid policy, which supports highly skilled workers, is needed. Finally, government support for finding housing, mentors, and youth communities, as well as support for start-ups, should be considered.
