In this paper, we study emergent form, contents and characteristics of ZhanCi(占辞, Prophecy, an interpretation of the crack results) in HuangZu(黃組, Huang group) which corresponds to the fifth stage of Yinxu Oracle bone inscriptions. Before we deal with the ZhanCi of HuangZu, we provide a general analysis for the ZhanCi of ChuZu(出組, Chu group), HeZu(何組, He group) and WumingZu(無名組, Wuming group), and point out that the records of ‘Wang zhan yue’(王占曰, ‘King prophesies’) are extremely rare. The main results of this work are two-fold.
First, we show that the ZhanCi of HuangZu is written in a characteristic form, and only positive prophecies such as ‘Ji’(吉), ‘DaJi’(大吉), and ‘YinJi’(引吉) were recorded. This is due to the fact that in this period, ZhanCi was mainly documented on the Oracle bone asking whether good or bad things will happen. This is a contrasted difference between HuangZu and BinZu in the sense that the latter exhibits both positive and negative prophecies, and it is recorded in various forms.
Second, we observe that the ZhanCi of HuangZu is mostly recorded in some specific contents. For the case of BinZu, it is recorded in various contents, whereas for the case of HuangZu, it is mostly recorded in Buxun(卜旬, divination for the next ten days), Tianlie(田獵, Hunting), but some of it can be found in Junshi(軍事, military affairs), Jisi(祭祀, sacrifice) and Nongye(農業, Harvest).
